Lots of fire pits, stoves, tables, and even a pair of vault toilets. When I walked through, there was a large group of hikers sitting and eating their lunches at the tables. The camp was owned by the Methodist Church for years, although the good folks at Adams Pack Station raised the funds to purchase the area in In the future, they plan to restore and renovate the cabins and hold events in this incredible historic location.
You can use their web site to reserve a cabin ahead of time. If a staff member is working something the Pack Station hopes to improve , you can also tour some of the historic buildings at the camp. Continue along the Sturtevant Trail as it skirts along the flood control dam and crosses the creek. At the junction with the Upper Zion Trail, hop onto the Upper Zion and say goodbye to the water and cool canyon breezes. This section of the trip crawls up the north side of the Mount Zion ridge, passing through a short section of Jeffrey Pines before getting back to that all-too-familiar low San Gabriel scrub.
This section of the trail has its fair share of history, too. This was the original route of the trail to Sturtevant Camp, built in by Wilbur Sturtevant himself and, one assumes, some helpers. After a series of fires and landslides in the s, the trail fell out of use until the Sierra Club and volunteers from the Big Santa Anita Gang rebuilt the route in There is a small plaque dedicated to these volunteers at a short spur trail that leads to the peak of Mount Zion at 5.
The summit is surrounded by high chaparral, but you can make out the surrounding landscape of Mount Wilson and get a nice view of the entire Santa Anita Canyon at 5. Go back to the Mount Zion trail, and follow the trail as it switchbacks down the south face of the mountain.

Waterfall Wednesdays!!! Sturtevant Falls was one of the more attractive waterfalls in the Southern California area. A lot of cars parked on the left side in this picture wound up getting citations On our most recent visits here, we ended up having a difficult time finding parking that was reasonably close to the trailhead at Chantry Flat see directions below.
Even back in March , the parking situation was such that people were willing to take chances with getting tickets by parking onto the Chantry Flat Road itself Therefore, what was supposed to be a roughly 3. Just remember when you are walking down this that you will have to walk back up here at the end of the hike, so if it seems like too much, then it may not be worth continuing.
When you make it to the bottom, you are greeted with a small bridge that you will cross and a sign that lets you know the waterfall is 1. You will also start to see a few of the man-made waterfalls that they have on this trail. These are pretty awesome to see when the water is running as it impressively cascades over them. This path is shaded for the rest of the way, and it provides a peaceful and incredibly beautiful trail along the stream. The trail continues through the light forest area until it meets with a small community of houses.
I was told these cabins are privately owned, and people live there on a seasonal basis. They are cool, and there are about 15 of them along the trail. Some even have little walkways, as well as outhouses and outdoor furniture.
