This is all from my personal experience on the islands, nothing I have read on any blog or website trying to sell you on an expensive vacation package at one of the resorts. The waters off the beaches of Sanibel have a gradual slope that allows shells to be washed up onto the beach extremely easily.
Captiva Island beaches on the other hand have a steeper slope in the water directly off the beach, which tends to cut down on the amount of shells that wash up on the beach. The same gradual sloping shoreline that collects millions of shells on the beaches of Sanibel also prevent it from having bright clear blue water most of the year. As waves travel across shallow water they pick up speed and tend to stir up sand and sediment from the ocean floor.
Since the water off Sanibel is shallower than Captiva, this causes bigger waves and murkier water. If Sanibel is rough and murky you can often drive a few miles to Captiva and find calm and clear water.
The plaza also has a few restaurants to grab a snack or lunch. Jet Ski Rentals with No Restrictions. My favorite time to visit is October through May, when the weather is cooler and hurricane season is either winding down or completely over. The Islands do get afternoon thunderstorms pretty much daily.
However, they only last minutes and then the sun returns. Beachview Cottages is where we stay pretty much everytime we visit Sanibel. They offer one or two bedroom cottages, bike rentals, a heated pool, and beach chair rentals. The cottages are clean, spacious, have great little screened porches, are reasonable, and are right on the beach!
This is the best value and our favorite beachy lodging in Sanibel. Rentals of cottages include efficiencies to three bedrooms, some with large screened porches. This place is a real hideaway! They also rent bikes, beach chairs and umbrellas, and kayaks.
Check Booking. South Seas is a huge resort with two and a half miles of beautiful beaches. This is where you want to go for a little splurge. They have everything from a hotel room to a condo, or even a private home! They have beach villas and cottages, as well, with amazing views of the Gulf of Mexico. Here you can relax and do nothing, or you can play golf, tennis, work out in their fitness center, have a massage, go boating, or… have you ever parasailed???
There are several dining options on the property, and even a Starbucks. The resort sits between the Gulf and the Bay on 13 gorgeous secluded acres. They have a huge pool, tennis courts, fitness center, hot tubs and a day spa. You can rent boats or kayaks right on the property, or just walk their soft sand beaches and search for the perfect shells.
And… talk about a beautiful sunset? No need to go anywhere to see it besides your room. The beautiful Il Cielo wins awards year after year for their amazing seafood and other beautifully prepared meals.
Reservations are highly recommended. Timbers is our go-to place for the freshest fish… have them cook it for you, or take it home to cook yourself. In the mood for some Florida lobster? No place is better for lobster, unless you grab it yourself out of the gulf! They also have a great happy hour 7 days a week from pm, and then again from 10 pm to closing. Michael and I are Italian, so we do love our Italian food.
But Il Tesoro is the real deal… the chef was born in Sicily! They serve local seafood-based Italian cuisine. Reservations are a must. They serve a great BIG breakfast, and they also serve lunch. I LOVE their huge pancakes! Reservations are a must unless you want to wait two hours for dinner!
The Mucky Duck is the place to have a cocktail and watch a spectacular sunset on the Gulf at one of their outdoor picnic tables. They actually have very good food, too! They have a nice menu with beautiful views, and you can drive your boat right up to their dock.
Old Captiva House is open for breakfast and dinner, and has some fantastic sushi and local fish! Reservations are recommended. Their food consists of flavors from the Caribbean, such as jerk chicken tacos and crab cakes. They have live music every day but Monday and Tuesday. Many people think the Sanibel and Captiva Islands are in the same place.
However, despite their proximity to each other, these sister islands are unique in their own right. If you're looking to settle in either Sanibel or Captiva, the first step is to find the right realtors who know both regions well. The thriving island life that Sanibel and Captiva have to offer is arguably their most attractive feature. It's hard to resist the draw of the white sands, beautiful waters, and enticing coastal weather.

Before you decide which one is the right fit, here are a few characteristics that set these two islands apart that you may want to consider. In terms of geographical size, Sanibel Island is vast compared to Captiva. It has a larger population, and as far as vibrant beach living goes, it has plenty to offer its visitors and residents.
