If you have spent more than days outside Canada, the application that you submit to renew your PR card will not be the same as someone who has been physically present in Canada. You must demonstrate that you fall under one of these exemptions, and you have to prove this with documentation.

These applications contain much more documentation than the usual PR card application. Our office specializes in PR applications submitted from outside Canada. If an application for a PR card is refused, then the applicant will have to undergo a residency determination. If a negative decision is made on a residency determination, the applicant will lose their status as a permanent resident.

If the applicant is inside Canada at that time, a removal order will be issued for the applicant to be forced to leave Canada. For these reasons, it is extremely important not to submit an application for a PR card or PR Travel Document without the necessary additional information and supporting documents. If you are applying to renew your PR card, replacing a stolen card, or never received your first PR card, then current processing time is now days. Renew your PR card from outside Canada. Urgent Processing If you need your PR card urgently, you may qualify for urgent processing. Outside of Canada? You may still qualify If you live outside Canada fulltime you may still meet the requirements or be able to apply based on humanitarian or compassionate grounds. Exemptions include: Living outside Canada with a Canadian spouse Working outside Canada fulltime for a Canadian company This list is not comprehensive and there are other reasons that you may renew your PR card from outside Canada and be eligible to do so despite having been inside Canada for fewer than days in the past 2 years.

You do not need to apply for a PR card if you are a new permanent resident. If you do not do this, IRCC will cancel the PR card and you will have to apply for another one and pay the processing fees. If you are an existing permanent resident who has received their PR card in the past, you will most likely also receive your renewed PR card by mail.

You may reschedule your appointment if needed. However, you must pick up your PR card within days, otherwise you may need to re-apply. PR cards have limited space for names. If your surname is longer than 20 characters, or if your given names first and middle are longer than 15 characters, your name will be shortened. This is not a mistake. This is OK. The PR card is also a travel document.
